Background of the Study
Igbo oral traditions are celebrated for their rich and dynamic narrative practices, where the narrative voice plays a pivotal role in conveying cultural values, histories, and communal identities. In Enugu, storytellers utilize distinct vocal qualities, intonation, and emphasis to bring stories to life, creating an immersive experience for their audiences. The narrative voice not only serves as the medium for relaying historical events but also acts as a marker of authenticity and authority within the community (Okafor, 2023). Recent studies indicate that variations in narrative voice can reflect socio-cultural nuances and signal shifts in traditional performance practices (Ike, 2024). Moreover, the narrative voice in these oral traditions functions as a tool for intergenerational transmission of knowledge, where the stylistic choices of the narrator contribute to the interpretive frameworks of listeners. The performative aspect of the narrative voice—through modulation, pauses, and rhythmic delivery—enables storytellers to engage audiences emotionally and intellectually. As modern influences permeate traditional spaces, there is growing concern regarding the preservation of these oral techniques. This study investigates how the narrative voice in Igbo oral traditions is maintained, transformed, and reinterpreted in Enugu, with a focus on its role in sustaining cultural heritage and fostering communal identity (Chukwu, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite its centrality in Igbo oral traditions, the role of narrative voice has not been sufficiently examined in the context of contemporary performance practices in Enugu. Many studies have provided general overviews of oral storytelling; however, few have focused on the vocal strategies that distinguish traditional narratives from modern renditions (Nwankwo, 2023). This oversight creates a gap in understanding how narrative voice contributes to cultural preservation and audience engagement. Furthermore, rapid social changes and technological influences may be altering traditional vocal practices, thereby risking the dilution of cultural identity. The study aims to address this gap by critically examining the narrative voice as a dynamic element in Igbo oral traditions, assessing its evolution, and exploring its implications for maintaining indigenous communication methods.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to an investigation of the narrative voice in Igbo oral traditions as practiced in Enugu and does not extend to other regions or performance forms.
